Hope you can make it. It promises to be a happy and fun event.
A short history of Klezmer (thanks to Joan Cowan)
The word /Klezmer/ comes from 2 Hebrew words: /Kley/ and zmer. /Kley/ means vessels or tools and zmer means melody, so Klezmer literally means “vessels of the music.” Before the 17th century, in Eastern and Central Europe, Klezmer meant any musical instrument. By the 18th century, it meant a folk instrument. Today, the word includes dance, vocal, and melismatic (melodic embellishment) instrumental music.
Early Klezmer instruments included frame drums, cymbals, bells, and timbrels. Today’s instruments include violins, clarinets, accordions, stick drums, trumpets, guitars, and more.
The early performers of Klezmer music were traveling musicians who played at weddings in small villages in Poland, the Ukraine, Romania, and Bohemia. Klezmer music was also popular in Prague. During the Renaissance, Klezmer was well received in Italy as well. But Klezmer music was the music of the poor. The musicians received a small amount of money from the bride’s family, and they were fed the same fine food as the wedding guests enjoyed. Their greatest reward, however, was playing—and bringing happiness to lives that were too often devoid of it.
[Much of this early history can be found in more detail in the first chapter of /The Book of Klezmer/ by Yale Strom, which is available from the Bainbridge Public Library or from the Chavurah library at Cay Vandervelde’s house.]

COORDINATING COMMITTEE MINUTES
October 20, 2009 – Present: Robin, Paul, David, Cay
CEMETERY: Questions: is it possible for us to buy plots from Pt Blakely? Can we buy plots from KS? Do we want a separate SH cemetery? If we had a separate SH cemetery, would it need to be halachically correct? Currently Pt. Blakely is under a city-imposed moratorium and cannot sell new plots for several more years. So discussions with Pt. Blakely are not urgent. But it makes sense to find out the desires of the chavurah and to talk to KS about our options with them so that when Pt. Blakely reopens, we are primed to act. Proposed plan of action: Create a draft resolution stating that it is the wish of SH that all SH members should have access to a Jewish cemetery on BI. Take that resolution to the annual meeting for a vote. Over the next year or two, have conversations with SH members, KS and Pt. Blakely to figure out how to make that happen. Action item: Ask Sharon to attend Dec 15 Coord meeting to 1) discuss draft resolution and this strategy, and 2) give us an update on the cemetery situation. Cay will ask Sharon to attend Dec 15 meeting.
ROBO CALLER: Paul will activate our robo call reminder service in time for the Chanukah party.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
CPC: Paul talked to Ovation about sponsoring Fiddler and they were not interested. Therefore, we decided we should buy an ad in the program. Coordinating Comm’ee authorized spending $125 for ¼ page ad. Next meeting: we will figure out where that money comes from. Action item: Paul will pursue with CPC, Paul will also arrange for CPC to look at cost of having a listing under Synagogues in Qwest and PDC Pages phone book.
Ruach: it was a very successful High Holiday
Torah repair: Action item: Robin will ask Sharon for update
COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIPS: We wanted to make sure that everyone who has signed up for a committee is contacted by their committee so they feel involved. Action item: ask Denise to bring list of who’s on which committee to next meeting. Then ask committees to reach out to new members.
ROSTER: Action item: Paul will put the roster on line.
FORUM: do we want to continue with the current platform given its limitations and people’s difficulty logging on? Paul suggested switching to BigTent. David suggested that we not make a change unless someone has the time to do a full migration of all of our docs. Action item:: David will look at BigTent.
RETREAT/ANNUAL MEETING Date: June 5/6 Decision: we agreed to have a joint retreat/Havdalah/annual meeting at Kitsap State Park over a Saturday night.
Action items: Robin will put an announcement in the newsletter, Robin will call park for info to make sure there are enough cabins for people who are apt to want them and find out about making reservations (cost? deposit? refundable?)
NEXT MEETING: December 15, 7:00 pm Agenda: Report from Denise: Budget update, Who’s on which committee? Item from the Annual Meeting: Coord Comm’ee will designate a procedure for how to handle any additional money that comes in, and also what happens if we take in less money. e.g. If we get more than 14,000 does it go to Ruach bec they took biggest hit? Or? Where does $125 for ad in Fiddler program come from?
