NEW HOME FOR OUR LIBRARY AND OUR TORAH

A Blessing in your House!

Two opportunities available to serve the Shir Hayam community with just a little extra floor space in your home:

- The Shir Hayam Jewish Library – about 9 linear feet of tall bookshelves full of sacred, historical, cultural, fiction and educational books as donated over the years by our community members; not heavily used, but an appreciated resource for our teachers, our home-bound and anyone just wanting a good Jewish read – Our precious Torah and Ark – protected by heavy-duty cases on castors – about 6-8 square feet of floor space; has been cared for by lots of families over the years and is considered the source of lots of good luck for its hosts

Please call Cay Vandervelde or any Coordinating Committee member if you can help.

EXCHANGE STUDENT IDEA

We received this idea from Linda Sohlberg. This year, AFS has a Saudi boy (Muslim) living with a Jewish family and attending a Catholic school. It has been fantastic, and even garnered an interview in the “Jewish Times.” Everyone has learned a lot about each other. It occurred to me that maybe there are other like minded families, ones who might be interested in hosting a Muslim kid. It is what it’s all about- learning about other cultures, beliefs…especially important given recent global events.

We have a really neat girl from Yemen, and there are others of course. Maybe a boy from Egypt (concert violinist). Kids from Lebanon, Jordan, Macedonia (she is Orthodox Christian). If you are interested please contact Linda at 206-842-1119 or wyldwooddogs@gmail.com

HAPPENING ON BAINBRIDGE

Gregg Onewein, is one of several artists featured at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts for the entire month of May. The theme is “Shorelines.” The opening (first Friday Art Walk) is from 6-8 PM on May 6th.

HAPPENING IN SEATTLE

YOM HASHOAH COMMEMORATION EVENTS

From Thessalonika to Terezin, Voices of the Holocaust

Music of Remembrance concludes its thirteenth season with its spring concert, “Voices,” on Monday, May 9, 2011 at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall. The evening brings the world premiere of a new MOR-commissioned work by the leading Israeli composer Betty Olivero. It also features the return of the acclaimed American vocal composer Lori Laitman’s Vedem oratorio in an intimate song cycle arrangement. The 7:30 p.m. concert in the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall is preceded at 6:45 p.m. by an on-stage interview of Terezín survivor Sidney Taussig.

Betty Olivero’s Kolo’t (“Voices”) weaves excerpts of Ladino ballads and poems around a poignant letter from an anonymous Auschwitz survivor from Thessalonika. The work recalls the vitality of Thessalonika’s once-vibrant Sephardic community, and relates its tragic fate. Mezzo-soprano Angela Niederloh performs with an ensemble of violin, viola, cello, clarinet, harp, and percussion.

6:45 p.m. Meet Sidney Taussig: Newsman/filmmaker John Sharify interviews Sidney Taussig, who as a 14-year-old prisoner had the courage and foresight to hide and preserve VEDEM’s precious 800 manuscript pages.

About Music of Remembrance – Music of Remembrance (MOR) fills a unique spiritual and cultural role in Seattle and throughout the United States by remembering Holocaust musicians and their art through musical performances, educational programs, musical recordings and commissions of new works. Since its 1998-99 inaugural year, MOR has presented two major concerts annually at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall, marking the anniversary of Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass) each fall and Holocaust Remembrance Day each spring. www.musicofremembrance.org.

Against Forgetting: A Concert of Remembrance for Victims of the Holocaust
