  • Approve budget for next year
  • Vote for new Coordinating Committee members
  • Learn how to use Big Tent – the new Shir Hayam online communications site that will replace the Forums – Yes, it’s true: you asked for it, you got it! So many people had trouble with the Forums that we’re moving to a new site. Only at the Annual Meeting: a tutorial! BRING YOUR LAPTOP if you have one.
    And, of course, noshes served!

BIG TENT

Shir Hayam is changing “platforms” for our Forums. Much thanks to Lisa and Sam Weiss for establishing and hosting the forums these past years. After some discussion and research we have decided to move the forums to “Big Tent”, a site intended for groups like ours to connect and share documents, topics and news. So, in the next two weeks you should get an email inviting you to join Shir Hayam at Big Tent. Go ahead and try it! The site does have some banner ads which support it but thus far they have been very benign. Your personal information(basically what is in our current printed roster), is SSL encrypted and is MUCH more secure than standard email or regular websites. Information that you fill in in your profile will only be viewable by members of our group. I do not think there will be any Facebook like opt out problems with this site.
We will have a live demo of the site at our Annual Meeting (bring laptop if you have one). Questions can be sent to davidc01@aol.com if you can’t attend the meeting.

SUMMER BOOK GROUP

Following on the highly successful screening of “A Serious Man” (thank you Jon Garfunkel and Rebecca Rockefeller) , David Cowan is proposing a book for your summer reading with a get together in August to discuss. The book is “Devotion” by Dani Shapiro, published in Feb 2010. The library has a copy. It is well written, moving and funny. Email davidc01@aol.com to join the mailing group…

Garden Service Project

Signed up for the Garden Service Project?
Thank you to the four families who have done so!

The rest of you may not have heard that we began our second season of feeding people without homes last month. Adult and youth members and non-members co-labored to prepare/plant a dedicated vegetable bed.

The plan is to maintain the bed for the next month or two, then harvest the vegetables and head over to Seattle’s Compass Center to fix the food and serve our fellow human beings. Those who took part last year said it was heartwarming and worthwhile, not to mention a fun way of our building community :)
Please join in by signing up for a weekend of weeding (just 30 minutes, not the entire 48 hour weekend!) The trip is expected to be scheduled sometime in July.
Click here to claim your slot — thanks!

Operation Sack Lunch

Mark your calendars for our second annual trip to the Compass Center in Seattle with Vegetables from the Shir Hayam Garden to help prepare and serve lunch. Kids from JLC will be participating and other Shir Hayamers are welcome. Tuesday July 20th 9 AM – 3PM or any fraction there of. Further details in the July Newsletter. Celebrating our Jewish Heritage
Ever wonder if your treasures are real gems?
The Washington State Jewish Historical Society is offering a unique opportunity to find out if the heirlooms, tchochkes and memorabilia that are precious to you are real treasures! Bring your Judaica items, American modern and contemporary paintings, decorative arts and ceramics, jewelry and other prized possessions to Hidden Gems, and in an “Antiques Roadshow” format a specialist will provide a verbal appraisal reflecting fair market value. Even if the worth is only sentimental, you’ll have the chance to talk with someone who appreciates your favorite belongings as much as you do!

If you don’t have something to appraise, come and enjoy doing a project with your children or grandchildren, creating a family tree, capturing your family’s oral history, learning about other families in the community or just enjoying a light lunch and meeting with friends while you support the Historical Society and celebrate our common heritage!
