IMPORTANT – Torah History Misplaced
The framed historical document that accompanies our Torah has been missing for the last year. Please, please, please check to see if you have it at your house. We think it would be in a plastic rubber-maid-like container with a white lid that also contains the yamukas. If you have it, please contact Sharon Rutzick.
BAR MITZVAHS
Shir Hayam is warmly invited to attend Mitchell Stahl’s Bar Mitzvah. It will be held Saturday, August 16, 2008 10:00 in the morning at Boundy Farm. Please RSVP if you are planning to celebrate with us. Robyn and Eric Stahl – 842-6761
Sam Jabloner’s Bar Mitzvah will be on Saturday, August 30. Save the date.

Mishabeirach
Our Mishabeirach prayers are offered for Arlene Rosenblatt, Julie’s mother, and Arthur Soltar, Steve’s father.
Congratulations!
On an amazing, wonderful simcha for our chavurah – the recent marriage of Mark Cowan and Carol Hurwitz. Now we have three Cowan households! Mazel Tov to Mark and Carol and our wishes for a joyous future together.
And Mazel Tov to these folks who have been such a part of our chavurah:
—Rebecca Gottlieb on her graduation from Bainbridge High School. Rebecca is currently in Germany and will be attending Tufts University in Boston this fall.
—Molly Stern on her graduation from Seattle Central with an A.A. in Deaf Studies. Molly will transfer to Cal State at Humboldt where she will study Biology, looking towards a nursing career.
—Jonah Jacobrown will begin a program of Environmental Studies at Evergreen State College in Olympia this fall.
—Miriam Shakow just received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Harvard University, and her husband, Rob McGreevey, also just received his Ph.D. in Education/American History from Brandeis University. Recognizing what an accomplishment this is for a family, Harvard awarded a degree to their young son Theo. Rob and Miriam are packing up and moving this month to Nashville where Miriam will start teaching at Vanderbilt and Rob will begin postdoctoral studies.
—Dan and Shuli Rutzick on their new home in Portland.
World Travelers
—David Cowan, Sue Steindorf, Ben and Ellie are currently in Europe and will be going on to Dharamsala, India, where they will all work in an orphanage there for almost a month.
—Gwen Gottlieb is in Belize helping immunize people there.
—Mikaela Rogozen-Soltar continues her Ph.D. studies in Granada, Spain and will be home for the month of August.
—Anne Stern and Cay Vanderveldve are on Ometepe in Nicaragua, where Anne and her marimba band are entertaining islanders and also teaching how to build marimbas.
—Cindy Taylor, Chris Stanley, and Cindy’s mother are traveling through Scandinavia and Finland now.
Best wishes to Marilyn Gottlieb on her several new business ventures. She describes her Senior Move Management, saying, “These moves are a great opportunity to adopt a simpler lifestyle, start afresh and take up new interests, and the security of an experienced helper can expedite and facilitate the process.” Marilyn will do such tasks as planning, sorting, staging, packing, disposing and dispersing excess furniture and household items, and arranging for moving. She also does Home Staging and is selling her art, photos printed onto canvas and enhanced by oil painting. More info can be found on her website: www.movingworks.org or by contacting her at marilynn@movingworks.org.
PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS! AUGUST 23 “SHABBAT ON THE BEACH”
Bringing Peninsula Jewish folks together, congregation Bet Shira of Port Townsend is hosting this wonderful-sounding day of music, learning, and meals together, concluding with havdalah and a bonfire on the beach. Perry Pinchas Spring of Bet Shira will be sending us further details soon.
HIGH HOLIDAYS
Rabbi Hanna Tiferet Siegel will help lead our services this year and would like to work with members of our community. We already have a machzor, and Shir Hayam people have worked closely in the past with guest rabbis, such as Larry Gerstenhaber. It is an opportunity for both Hanna and our community. If you have any particular writings, music, or poetry that you would like to offer for the services, suggestions, or would like to work with Hanna on a part of the services, please contact either Julie Rosenblatt (842-5013) or Sharon Rutzick (842-8453). With participation, our lay leadership learns, gains confidence, and is strengthened.
VOLUNTEER NEEDED – Mitzvah Corps Contact Person
Chavurah = community, fellowship. Part of being a community is being there for each other in both good times and times of hardship: illness, accident, family deaths… For this reason Shir Hayam does have a Mitzvah Corps, and when an individual or family in our community undergoes a crisis, often the entire community wishes to provide support.
This takes co-ordination and a person (or 2) willing to act as contact and coordinator. If you are willing to step up and be that person, or join up with another to be co-coordinators, either contact Denise Brown (debrown33@msn.com or 780-0931) or indicate your desire to take on this wonderful Mitzvah on your membership form, which you will be receiving in the mail this summer.
YURT RAISING
David and Julie are building a Yurt. We are going to be raising the Yurt on Saturday, July 19th and the more hands the better. This yurt will be a space that we will have to share with the community for classes, meetings, gatherings of all sorts. Our event will be from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm and we will even feed you afterwards. Of course kids are welcome to hang out and play. Please RSVP either by email or phone – thanks, hope to see you all soon.
Peace,
Julie and David

American Jewish World Service – Campaign for Darfur
This summer AJWS is intensifying our work to bring an end to the genocide in Darfur. Recognizing that humanitarian aid is crucial but will not stop the genocide, AJWS is also engaged in an intense advocacy campaign to halt the crisis.
Over the last four years I have spoken to tens of thousands of people about the ongoing conflict in the region. When I have posed the question: “What will you say when your grandchildren ask, where were you during the genocide against the people of Darfur?” people have responded by attending demonstrations, organizing their communities, urging their elected officials to speak out, and giving money. But this has not been enough to stop the violence.
Today, as the Olympics approach, the world spotlight is on China, whose economic and political support for Sudan continues to underwrite the violence in Darfur. AJWS, along with the entire anti-genocide movement, is using this window of opportunity to raise awareness about the links between China and the government of Sudan, and to increase the pressure on those who have a role to play in ending the violence, including the U.S. government, U.N. Security Council members and mutual funds, as well as corporate sponsors of the Olympics such as NBC and Coca-Cola.
Over the coming weeks, AJWS will be organizing an online “Did You Know?” campaign. Each message will contain concrete suggestions for actions you can take in the run up to the Olympic Games to help bring an end to the genocide. We must let China and others guilty of failing to do their part to stop the genocide in Darfur know that we are watching them and holding them accountable. Click Here to participate in this effort.
