January 30 –Tu B’Shvat Celebration

MISHABERACH

A speedy and full recovery to Linda Golden following her recent knee replacement surgery.

TU B’SHVAT CELEBRATION

All are welcomed. Tu B’Shvat Seder followed by a potluck dinner. Saturday, January 30, 2010, 4:30 pm, The Rosenkotz’s yurt- 7439 Coyote Farm Lane

One of the Jewish year’s most beautiful ceremonies, Tu B’Shvat, the New Year’s of the Trees, celebrates the beginning of the rising of the sap, the year’s first sign that trees will come back to life after winter’s deathlike stillness. Traditionally we eat fruits and nuts, plant trees, tell stories, sing songs and offer blessings that life will rise renewed within us and within all the trees of the world.

TRADITION, TRADITION (FEEDBACK, FEEDBACK!)

Actually, Coordinating Committee would like your feedback on a new proposed tradition stemming from one of the major themes that came out of last year’s Annual Meeting, that members would like to feel more community!

We see an exciting opportunity to embed the discussion of our community within a fun community event/function — specifically, an overnight outing, easily drivable for all.

The plan is to combine storytelling with music and games, getting to know each other better (both adults and the youngsters). Kitsap Memorial State Park (click here for map) has accommodations for everyone’s comfort level:

• Camp sites — $21
• Seven-site group camping — $132
• Five-person cabins — $66
• Hospitality house — $172

We need your feedback now as we’ll need to protect our dates by making reservations — so please take a moment to check it out within your household, then give us feedback via this survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/P7QHLSF.

Please reply asap, no later than Sunday Jan 10 — thank you!

TIKKUN OLAM CORNER

Our own Rachel Brown is part of a group of Jewish teens called NFTY (North American Federation of Temple Youth) and as a social action project we are collecting items to donate to El Centro de la Raza. It is a Latino community center in Seattle which provides all types of services from help getting green cards to child care. She was asked to collect baby items such as diapers, wipes, clothes, etc. Any new and gently used items are acceptable and appreciated. Rachel can pick up any donations at Sunday school or she can arrange to come and pick them up from your home. For more information on El Centro de la Raza, here is their website: http://www.elcentrodelaraza.com/index.htm.

The deadline for donations is January 29.

CHANUKAH PARTY REPORT

Many thanks to Wylie Soltes, for making our Hannukah celebration at the Grange on Friday, December 11 exceptional. He welcomed his Dad, Harley, to open his Hannukah present early – a deep fryer! Perfect for sufginyot! Harley treated everyone to freshly made pastry accompanied with apricot preserves and lemon curd. Tasty!

With the craft activity hosted by Dinah Mortell, and high stakes dreidel games spun by adults & kids alike, all enjoyed deejayed Hanukkah music in the background. After a latka-focused potluck dinner many joined in for dancing led by Zann & Craig Jacobrown.

Congratulations to all the winners of the latka contest!

In addition to the above mentioned, thanks to Susan Thomas for arranging our very own deejay, Jeff, and to all those who helped with the cleanup. The evening definitely was bright: the table ladened with everyone’s lit menorah illuminated the Grange and burned through the darkening night as we sang songs and said prayers.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF REPORT

Congratulations to our own Ben Cowan, David Cowan, and Paul Travis for being part of the recent Ovation production of “Fiddler on the Roof”. Not only did 2,000+ attendees enjoy the show, they saw our Chavurah’s ad in the program and read some fascinating family-tree history tidbits David wrote. It was one of the largest Ovation Musical Theater productions (some 60 in the cast/crew, with just half a dozen Jews!) as well as one of the most successful (last 6 of the 9 performances sold out).

MOVIE DISCUSSION COMING SOON

There were so many positive responses from folks who wanted to meet and discuss the Coen brothers’ recent film,“A Serious Man,” but so little time in which to catch it while it was on the island, that we decided to wait until it comes out on DVD. When it does, we’ll have a video night and discussion – Sharon Rutzick
