MAZEL TOV
“Kids With A Heart” Compassionate Action Awards. On Sunday, November 22, Ben Cowan was among the awardees recognized by Bainbridge Youth Services. “As he approached his Bar Mitzvah in June, he decided that instead of gifts he wanted to donate money to a cause he learned about on his trip to India in 2008. While in Dharamsala, India volunteering with his family, Ben learned about Piyara Kutta. Ben had noticed the terrible mistreatment of stray dogs in Dharamsala, and became very interested in Piyara Kutta, which means “beloved dog” in Hindi. Piyara Kutta provides vaccinations, housing, and care for stray dogs, in addition to also providing education to the community on how to treat dogs kindly.
Ben’s experience inspired him to ask for donations to Piyara Kutta for his Bar Mitzvah. He was very successful, donating over $2,500 to Pixar Katter and has raised awareness here for this cause.”
TIKKUN OLAM CORNER
PROJECT WISHBONE REPORT
What a generous group we are! Shir Hayam signed up to bring 3 full Thanksgiving dinners to Helpline for Project Wishbone, but thanks to the wonderful generosity of our members, we had easily enough for four! Helpline provided Thanksgiving dinner to between 250 and 300 island families this year and the Helpline volunteers were hugely appreciative of our efforts.
CROPWALK 2009 REPORT
Thank you so much to all those who donated to make this year’s walk a success. Rachel Kerbrat & Denise Brown raised over $1,500 combined, and an anonymous donor will match that amount. Twenty percent of the funds raised locally is directed to Helpline House, as well as 5% given to Fishline in Poulsbo. The total for this year’s walk hit over $58,000.
KLEZMER-O-RAMA REPORT
I would like to thank again all those who helped make the 3rd Klezmer-O- Rama a success. The Eclectics, Bainbridge Island’s own Klezmer band, were outstanding, as usual. Zann and Craig Jacobrown did such a great job of teaching 5 East European dances to 60 people who came to dance, even 8 who came from Seattle. Thank you to Lisa Weiss and Denise Brown who organized the Shir Hayam Bakers. The cookies were delicious and attractively displayed. The coffee, tea, and water were appreciated. Thank you all. To the work crew who set up, took down, cleaned up and parking thank you. Thanks to Carol Cowan and helpers for ticket sales. Last but not least, the inspired dancing by Leslie Rialto accompanied by Laura DeLuca playing George Gershwin’s Summertime. Many who came requested an early return of the Klezmer-O-Rama. We broke even and look forward to our next date. And hope you do, too.
