HEALTH CARE STUDY CIRCLE REPORT
On Tuesday, March 25th six of us met to address the pressing issue of health care reform. Using an excellent curriculum prepared by Cedars Unitarian Church, we kicked off our study circle with a set of readings and graphs that outlined some of the major flaws in our current system (unequal access, spiraling and prohibitive costs, obscene profit taking by drug and insurance companies, uneven quality and delivery of care, etc.). Using a questionnaire in our study packets we assessed our existing knowledge of, and attitudes on, the issue, and then we discussed the material in the readings. We adjourned after two hours with a fresh stack of readings in preparation for next month’s meeting.
The goal of the study circle is to become better informed about health care so that we can effectively push for change. Other groups on the island are participating in similar health care circles and, later this summer or fall, all the groups will convene a forum with our legislators at which we will engage in an educated discussion of the issues and push for specific changes.
This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in grass roots democracy. All are welcome! We will meet five more times: 4/22, 5/13, 6/3, 6/24, and 7/15 All meetings are on Tuesdays at 7:00 pm. Please See member’s calendar
or call 206-855-7924 for location or for more info and to get a study packet for the next meeting.

TIKKUN OLAM CORNER
If you have a favorite charity that you would like to profile here – please let me know.
THE BREAST CANCER SITE is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on ‘donating a mammogram’ for free (pink window in the middle).
This doesn’t cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. Here’s the web site! Pass it along to people you know and don’t forget to click on the Hunger site, the Literacy site and the others – check the tabs across the top of the webpage.

SEEDS OF COMPASSION came about through a collaboration of the Kirlin Foundation and the Venerable Tenzin Dhonden to focus world attention on the following:
• Our communities need thoughtful, creative adults who are actively engaged citizens.
• Our global society needs people equipped to communicate across cultures and address differences through understanding and collaborative problem solving.
• These qualities must take root in early childhood.
• When children build from strong foundations emotionally, socially and cognitively, they can develop into compassionate adults.

SHOE PEOPLE HELPING THE WORLD… Why We Do What We Do
We have a simple mission: to impact as many lives as possible with the gift of shoes. We are partnering with charities and governments around the world to provide a basic (yet indispensable) gift that most of us take for granted.
You can help us in many ways: donating your own shoes, donating cash for freight, hosting a shoe drive, or even donating your time as a volunteer. As shoe industry professionals, we are working hard to use the resources at our disposal to make a difference — but we need your help (and your shoes) to reach out to the world. More details will be forthcoming, as the event gets closer. If you would like to make a donation now, click here.

DOWNSTAIRS AT TOWN HALL
ENTER ON SENECA ST. NOT THROUGH MAIN ENTRANCE ON 8TH
Outsiders in the Panels: Jews and Comics
Conventional wisdom places rock ’n’ roll at the dawn of American youth culture, but it was the comic books of the 1930s and ’40s that first created a radical divide between the generations. David Hajdu looks at why Jews—such as Will Eisner, Jules Feiffer, and Stan Lee—dominated the comic book industry, and how they employed comics to express their Jewish experience. Music critic for The New Republic, Hajdu is the author of Positively 4th Street. His new book is The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic Book Scare and How It Changed America.
